Somatic Experiencing (SE)

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, a
psychologist and researcher, that focuses on resolving and healing trauma and stress-
related disorders by addressing the body's physical and physiological responses to trauma.

The central idea behind Somatic Experiencing is that trauma is not only a psychological or emotional experience but also a somatic (bodily) one, and healing trauma involves addressing the physical sensations and responses that are stored in the body.

Somatic Experiencing has been used successfully to address a wide range of trauma-related issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), developmental trauma, physical trauma, and various stress-related disorders. It is a client-centred and body-oriented therapy that seeks to promote resilience and healing by reconnecting individuals with their natural capacity to restore balance and well-being.

Dr. Levine's groundbreaking book, "Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma", which introduced the principles of Somatic Experiencing to a wider audience, was published in 1997. Since then, Somatic Experiencing has continued to evolve and gain recognition in the field of trauma therapy. I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Country on which I live and work, and their ongoing connection to this land and water. I pay my respects to their culture and their Elders – past, present and future.
